Hello, parents and students! My name is Makayla and I have been the MSU Master of Social Work intern at Building 21 for the 2021-2022 school year. As my time at B21 comes to an end, I thought it would be a great opportunity to reflect on my journey so far and talk about what’s next for me.
This post would be amiss if I did not acknowledge how rewarding this experience has been. My goal with the students was to provide ongoing support with a loose structure and clear guidance. This allowed me to create a welcoming space where students had the freedom to express themselves as they are learning to navigate who they are in this world and their respective identity. They did not disappoint one bit. I took the time to really learn about each student individually. Their quirks, likes and dislikes, goals, interests, and many more. We had an abundance of important conversations, laughs, and lessons to be learned throughout our time together. I would not change a thing.
Unfortunately, I have already received my placement for 2022-2023, and I will be at a different internship in the community. However, if the previous interns are any indication, the students will be in great hands following my departure.
I hope that I have made a small difference in their lives in the same way that they have made a huge difference in mine.
